Brandýs nad Labem Château

The Brandýs Château has been an important location throughout Czech history. This summer and hunting residence hosted a number of monarchs of the Habsburg dynasty. This favourite residence of kings and emperors started out as a Gothic fortress before being transformed over the centuries into a Renaissance château with unique sgraffito décor.

The most glorious period in the history of the château was the reign of Rudolph II – the emperor liked Brandýs so much that he made it his main residence outside of Prague and invited respected personalities from the field of art and sciences to it. Among them was, for instance, the famous astronomer Tycho Brahe. Multiple architecture styles have left their mark on the structure, from Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque. The famous Baroque architect František Maxmilián Kaňka demonstrated his exceptional skill here. Further modifications, this time in the romantic neo-Gothic style, were performed at the behest of the Habsburgs. The last Habsburg owner of the residence was the emperor Charles I of Austria, who invited his newly-wed wife Zita of Bourbon-Parma to join him here. The couple would remember the days spent here as the happiest of their life.
